Natural Harmonics

What are harmonics?

Harmonics in music are component pitches of a harmonic tone which sound at certain multiples above the named note. In simple terms, it's that nice bell-like effect you get from playing an open string muted on the 12th fret and releasing quickly to let the tone ring.

How do I play natural harmonics?

Several harmonic techniques exist such as tapping, touch, and artificial harmonics. These instructions describe natural harmonics, which involve lightly muting and releasing a string on certain frets while plucking to achieve a harmonic effect.

The steps are simple, it just takes some practice.

  1. Select any string to play a harmonic. First (high E) string is good for practice.
  2. Lightly rest a finger on the string at the 12th fret, muting it.
  3. Pluck the string, and release your finger immediately.
  4. Let the string play open to hear the natural harmonic.

As you can see a harmonic can be played with any string on the 12th fret. With enough practice, you can jump around and even strum with a harmonic effect.
